📋 Your UK Balance Sheet

Formula: Net worth = assets − liabilities

Comparison uses ONS median household total wealth for the age of the household head. Your own figures can be individual or household — just be consistent.

Pensions

Use current pot / transfer value. For a defined-benefit scheme enter the CETV if you have one; otherwise leave at 0. State Pension is an income stream and is not added as a lump sum.

Property

Use a current market estimate (sold prices on Rightmove or Zoopla), not the price you paid. Mortgages go under debts so equity is calculated for you.

Include student loan in net worth Off by default. UK student loans are income-contingent and often written off, so including them can understate everyday wealth.

How to Use the UK Net Worth Calculator

The free UK Net Worth Calculator adds up what you own — cash, ISAs, pensions, property, investments, vehicles and other assets — and subtracts what you owe. Results update as you type and stay in your browser. Use it as a snapshot of today, not a forecast.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Pick an age band

Choose the age band that matches the household head (or you, if you are entering individual figures). This only drives the ONS comparison box. It does not change the arithmetic.

2. Enter assets at today’s value

3. Enter outstanding balances, not monthly payments

Mortgage, other property loans, cards, overdraft, personal loans, car finance, BNPL and anything else you still owe. Student loans are listed separately.

4. Leave the student-loan toggle off unless you want a stricter picture

UK student loans (Plan 1, 2, 4, 5 and postgraduate) are repaid as 9% of earnings above a threshold and are written off after a set term. They do not behave like a credit card. The calculator therefore excludes them from net worth by default. Turn the toggle on to include the balance; the excluded amount is still shown as a note.

5. Read the four wealth views

Formula: Net worth = total assets − included liabilities

Common Scenarios & Examples

Scenario: Early-career renter with a student loan

Goal: see liquid wealth clearly without letting an income-contingent loan wipe out the picture.

  1. Set age band to 25–34.
  2. Enter £4,000 in current accounts and £6,000 in a Cash ISA.
  3. Enter a £12,000 workplace pension and a £8,000 Lifetime ISA.
  4. Enter a £38,000 Plan 2 student loan and leave the include toggle off.
  5. Add £2,000 on a credit card.
Approximate results:

Net worth ≈ £28,000  |  Liquid net worth ≈ £16,000  |  Student loan shown as excluded £38,000

Scenario: Mid-career household with a mortgage

Goal: separate house equity from money you could actually use.

  1. Set age band to 35–44.
  2. Main home £350,000, outstanding mortgage £200,000.
  3. Stocks & Shares ISA £40,000, workplace pension £80,000, cash £8,000.
  4. Credit cards £3,000, car finance £7,000.
Approximate results:
  • Total assets ≈ £478,000
  • Total liabilities ≈ £210,000
  • Net worth ≈ £268,000
  • Home equity ≈ £150,000
  • Liquid net worth ≈ £38,000

ONS median household wealth for 35–44 is £209,600 (WAS, April 2020–March 2022).

Scenario: Approaching retirement

Goal: see how a larger pension pot and a smaller mortgage change the mix.

  1. Set age band to 55–64.
  2. Main home £425,000 with £40,000 left on the mortgage.
  3. Workplace pot £220,000, SIPP £90,000, Cash ISA £35,000, S&S ISA £55,000.
Approximate results:

Net worth ≈ £785,000  |  Pension wealth ≈ £310,000  |  Home equity ≈ £385,000. ONS median for 55–64 is £496,500.

Disclaimer & Limitations

Not professional advice: This calculator is an estimation and educational tool. It is not financial, tax, legal or mortgage advice. Values are only as accurate as the figures you type. Consult a regulated adviser for decisions that affect you.

Assumptions: Property is entered at estimated market value with no selling costs, stamp duty or CGT. Pensions are current pot or CETV figures — withdrawals may be taxable and transfer values can be lower than the “fund” of a defined-benefit income. State Pension is omitted because it is an income stream, not a pot. Crypto and unlisted business interests are marked to the value you supply.

ONS comparison: Medians are household total wealth for Great Britain from the Wealth and Assets Survey, April 2020 to March 2022, published 24 January 2025. They include net property, private pensions, net financial wealth and physical wealth. The survey wave’s accredited-statistics status has been suspended while ONS reviews quality. Figures are already several years old and exclude Northern Ireland.

Privacy: Figures are stored only in this browser under suite-networth so you can return later. Nothing is sent to a server when you calculate.
