Enter your gross income, expenses (or use the Trading Allowance), optional other income and region to see total liability, take-home pay, effective rate, a donut chart of your tax bill and a full band-by-band breakdown.
Select England, Wales & Northern Ireland or Scotland. Income Tax bands and rates differ in Scotland; Class 4 NICs are the same across the UK.
Results update live. You will see:
Goal: Estimate tax on £45,000 turnover with £5,000 expenses.
Goal: Use the £1,000 Trading Allowance instead of tracking small expenses.
Profits sit below the Personal Allowance and Class 4 Lower Profits Limit, so Income Tax and Class 4 are £0. You may wish to pay voluntary Class 2 to protect your NI record.
Not Professional Advice: This calculator is an educational estimation tool only and does not constitute tax, financial or legal advice. Actual liabilities depend on your full circumstances. Always check official HMRC guidance or consult a qualified accountant or tax adviser.
Assumptions: Calculations use 2026/27 rates and thresholds for England/Wales/NI or Scotland as selected. Personal Allowance taper is applied using total income (profits + other income). Class 4 is calculated solely on self-employment profits. Student loans, Marriage Allowance, Blind Person’s Allowance, pension relief, payments on account, VAT and limited-company rules are not included.
Scotland: Scottish Income Tax rates and bands are applied when selected. Class 4 NICs remain UK-wide.
Estimation Only: Real-world results can differ due to timing of contributions, capital allowances, losses brought forward and other factors.
