How to Use the Financial Planning Suite

The Financial Planning Suite is a free collection of personal finance calculators covering budgeting, savings goals, income and take-home pay, debt repayment strategies, investing, major life decisions (such as renting vs buying or car leasing), pensions, retirement planning, and UK-specific tax tools for individuals, freelancers, sole traders and limited-company directors. It is designed for anyone who wants quick, practical tools without accounts, downloads or complex software.

Overview

The suite currently offers 50 calculators, organised into the eight categories below. Every tool listed on this page is live β€” click a card to open it. Mortgage Affordability appears under both Loans & Debt and Major Life Decisions because it is useful in both contexts; it is the same calculator.

Budget & Savings Calculators

  • Emergency Fund Calculator – Recommends a cash-reserve target from your essential monthly spending and household risk profile (income type, job stability, dependents). Shows progress against current savings, time to reach the target at your monthly contribution, optional interest earned, a starter milestone, and a month-by-month build-up chart.
  • Savings Goal Calculator – Works out the monthly contribution needed to hit a named target by a chosen date, given current savings, expected return and compounding frequency. Shows total contributions vs interest, a progress chart against the goal line, and a period-by-period breakdown.
  • Rule of 72 Calculator – Estimates how long a starting amount takes to double at a given annual rate. Compares the Rule of 72, the Rule of 69.3 and the exact compound formula, with an interactive growth chart and year-by-year table.
  • Inflation Adjusted Income Calculator – Projects the future salary needed to keep today’s lifestyle, using inflation plus optional real income growth. Shows the required future salary, total and percentage increase, Rule of 72 for prices doubling, and a year-by-year purchasing-power table.
  • 50/30/20 (and 60/20/20) Budget Calculator – Splits after-tax take-home pay into needs, wants and savings using the 50/30/20 rule, a 60/20/20 alternative or a custom split. Add line items in each bucket, then see target vs actual, leftover unallocated pay, actual savings rate, a spending-share chart and a category table. Last budget is stored in the browser.
  • Net Worth Calculator (UK Specific) – Adds cash, ISAs, pensions (including CETV for defined-benefit schemes), property and other assets, then subtracts mortgages and other debts. Reports net worth, home equity, liquid net worth, pension wealth and a debt-to-asset ratio, with an optional ONS median household-wealth comparison by age band. Student loans can be included but are off by default.
  • Sinking Funds Planner – Turns irregular costs (Christmas, car insurance, boiler, holidays) into a combined monthly savings plan across up to 12 funds. Each fund has a target, amount already saved, deadline and optional priority. Supports weekly to quarterly contributions and optional interest, plus a per-fund summary, month-by-month schedule and allocation chart.
  • Savings Rate Calculator – Calculates savings as a percentage of take-home pay and projects years to financial independence from current invested assets, expected real return and a safe withdrawal rate. Shows the FI number, estimated FI age, a rate curve of years-to-FI at different savings rates, what-if increases and a year-by-year portfolio path.
  • True Cost of Habits Calculator – Converts a recurring spend (daily coffee, takeaways, and so on) into its 10-, 20- and 30-year cash cost versus the value if the same money were invested. Reports total spent, invested value and opportunity cost, with a year-by-year table, growth chart and Rule of 72 doubling time.
  • Subscription Audit Calculator (UK Specific) – Totals recurring subscriptions by amount, frequency and Keep / Review / Cancel status, with quick-add chips for common UK services. Shows monthly and annual cost by category, then projects what those payments could become in a Stocks & Shares ISA, Cash ISA or Lifetime ISA (including the 25% bonus), with allowance used and a year-by-year opportunity table.
